Growing Business - On the button

On the button is a graphic design and branding company specialising in the food & drink, property and publishing sectors.

Founder Nick Button started the company in 2016 having been a graphic designer for over 20 years working in design agencies, in-house and as a freelancer. He always wanted to run his own agency, giving him the freedom to work with the clients and sectors that excite and inspire him.

Nick got support on the Enterprise Steps programme via his business mentor; taking part in online courses; and networking. However the most important aspect of the programme was the one to one mentoring.

“These sessions helped me improve the problem areas of running my business and gave me ideas on how to push it forward and become more stable,” he says.

The business is still going after more than two years and it's growing slowly but steadily despite some setbacks along the way.

His biggest challenge so far has been finding new clients.

“I realised after setting up that most of my business network are designers, so essentially competitors in a very competitive sector. Therefore finding new clients from scratch has been a very big challenge.”

However, he has strengths that mark him out from this competition.

“I am an honest speaking, no nonsense designer with a wealth of experience. I don't try to baffle clients with confusing terminology to try and over sell my services,” Nick asserts.

Enterprise Steps has been instrumental in moving the business forward.

“The best decision I have made to date, was to seek help from Enterprise Steps, without which I think I would have folded a long time ago. It helped me focus and set me targets to improve.”

Now, he is enjoying the positive aspects of being his own boss, and looking ahead to the future.

“Running my own business gives me the freedom to work with clients that inspire me, knowing that all creative decisions and designs are mine. In the next 12 months I want to be in a position to expand and build a permanent team.”

Nick’s advice to other budding entrepreneurs?

“Have a clear business plan, seek advice and just go for it!”
